The Leonoix are a Kiravian family of much historical significance, associated with the state of Fariva.

Tradition holds that the Leonoix line descends from a soldier of the Second Coscivian Empire stationed in southern Phryðidan Province. Although this is not attested by any written sources, by the Qth century the Leonoix had become minor nobility in the area and a major sept within Clan Bannon.

The first of the family to settle in Ixnay was Rittonus Leonoix. Rittonus was made an officer of the Imperial Army and placed in command of a regiment of troops conscripted from Phryðidan in the Akúvaric Musters to fight the Cromwelutes. After fighting against the forces of Shagmar the Hoary in Vrykróva and along the Irovasdra coast, he settled on a tract of land granted to him by the Emperor in Fariva and established a homestead called Traprain.

Surname

Leonoix is highly unusual among Coscivian surnames in that it is morphologically an adjective rather than a noun. The name comes from the Postclassical High Coscivian leonoix, meaning "having the colouration of birch bark". The term was a borrowing of the Iathei Coscivian þléonoīx, itself a compound of þléon ("birch") and noīx ("grey-white").

The Leonoix family themselves do not use their surname as a noun, but rather as a proper adjective. Due to their historical prominence, many educated Kiravians are aware of this usage, and many publications (especially in the Northeast) adopt it themselves, but in spoken language Kiravians more commonly nominalise the name to 'Leonoixt for convenience.
