The term Cetsencalia was used as early as 1650 by Derian explorers of the Nysdra region, and the term was a simple Latinization of the name of Quetzenkel. The term was used in various applications until the early 20th century when its use was considered obsolete. The term entered prominent use in the 2000s and 2010s by the Sons of Levantia, who viewed all of Quetzenkel as potential "living space" for Levantine peoples and used its Latin language name. The separate use of the term to describe the lands which presently make up Cetsencalia was primarily driven by the Levantine Times Union in the 2010s, whose coverage of the South Nysdra War used the term to differentiate the recently annexed area from Quetzenkel. The term the interim territorial name for the region but was adopted as the official name by the Veltorine Social Council in 2017 during their participation in the Veltorine settlement project. The name "Principality of Cetsencalia" was formalized with the Cetsencalia Organic Act of 2019.
