Latin settlement in the Georgetown area dates back at least to the 1200s. After the July 1300 battle between Verona General Saturio Lurco Fulton ([[Fulton County, Verona|Fulton County]] is named after him) and [[Cartadanians|Native Cartadanians]] of the Palara Creek settlement, a trading post was established at Calcudi Spring in present-day Georgetown. The rich soil of the area (hence Richland County) attracted farmers, and several agriculture-related businesses were well established by the late nineteenth century.
