The origin of the name Truk is believed to have originated with the now extinct original Trukian lingua franca, a dialect of polynesian origin. In the very incomplete records known to exist, the word Truk is interpreted to mean either Mountain or Hill in probably reference to the main island's most distinguishing topographical feature, Mount Zandalay.
