Alazán Relay One Team was founded in 1958 by Pelaxian businessman and motorsport enthusiast Esteban Montserrat, backed by the state-supported automotive conglomerate Carrocerías Nacionales de Pelaxia. The team’s name, "Alazán" comes from a distinct breed of horse native to Pelaxia. Montserrat envisioned a Pelaxian team that could not only compete in the top echelons of motorsport but also test innovative mechanical and technical ideas.
Alazán made its Formula 1 debut in the 1959 Pelaxian Grand Prix, a landmark event as it was the first time a Pelaxian team competed in Relay One on home soil. The debut season, however, proved challenging. Alazán is considered one of the traditional and legendary racing teams of the circuit and has become a symbol of elegance and national pride.
History
Alazán made its debut in Relay One in 1959, entering the world of motorsport during a period when R1 teams were just beginning to experiment with more sophisticated engineering and aerodynamic designs. Founded by Pelaxian engineer Rafael Arellano, and businessman and motorsport enthusiast Esteban Montserrat and supported by industrialist Santiago Solana, Alazán’s initial goal was simple: to bring Pelaxian engineering prowess to the international racing circuit. However, the project was ambitious and required significant resources, leading to the involvement of the Pelaxian government.
During this era, the government of Pelaxia viewed Alazán as an opportunity to showcase the nation’s industrial and technological capabilities. As a result, Alazán received considerable state support, both financially and in terms of access to research facilities. In a post Great War era, the government saw Alazán as a symbol of national pride, and its success in international motorsports would serve to elevate Pelaxia’s image on the global stage.
In the early years, the team faced challenges competing against established Levantine teams. Nevertheless, with state funding and technical assistance, Alazán quickly gained recognition for its meticulous engineering and the aggressive racing style of its drivers. By the mid-1960s, Alazán secured several podium finishes and achieved its first victory in the 1967 Pelaxian Grand Prix.
