Law enforcement in Arcerion is one of the major components of the criminal justice system, along with the courts (both municipal, provincial, and federal) and the correctional and penal system (jails, prisons, social programs). Each of the three branches of the criminal justice system of Arcerion operate independently of the other, but there is a working relationship between them as they form a process that goes from criminal investigations through trial to the jail, bail, and probationary system. There are nearly 200,000 sworn and registered law enforcement officers serving in Arcerion, with roughly a quarter of those being women. Of those 200,000 approximately 60,000 serve as officers, special agents, or detective constables for a number of federal law enforcement agencies.
Law enforcement in Arcerion operates primarily through municipal police forces and local sheriff's offices. These police agencies include municipal police departments, local town and county sheriff's offices, provincial police forces (Governorate), wildlife and fisheries officers, and most prominently members of the Royal Arcerion Constabulary. The prime function of these agencies is the conduct of criminal investigations, community policing, preventative policing, special investigations, prevention of crimes in progress, temporary detention of suspected criminals. Other more specialized police units also regularly work with courts to serve warrants. Law enforcement agencies in Arcerion are considered to be first responders (along with firefighters, paramedics and emergency services) as they provide a response to threats to local communities and public safety. They also assist with the security of public facilities and government property, such as close protection for political figures and security for large events or venues like music festivals. Police forces also assist with security at protests, or in some cases, counter-riot policing during times of un lawful activity that is prejudiced to good order.
