Mirzak Cheese Vaults

The Mirzak Cheese Vaults are a secret underground facility that holds the Corummese strategic cheese reserve. The government of Corumm as part of its food security policies maintains a cyclopean surplus of cheese that can be distributed to the public in case of a grave disruption of supply chains caused by general warfare and naval blockades. Corummese cheeses made from the milk of the hardy Corummese donkey can also be preserved in storage for many years without any degrading of its quality or taste.

While the strategic cheese reserve has existed since the early 1970's, all of the product was bought from private conglomerates, known collectively as Big Cheese. Big Cheese dominated the cheese market and operated it as a racket, driving the prices to ludicrous levels by keeping most of the cheese stored away. Upon the seizure of power the PCD determined to bring Big Cheese and its cohorts to heel and began doing so by nationalization of assets, arrest and execution of industry executives and strict labeling regulations. By 1999 the Big Cheese companies were completely overthrown and the sector was taken over by the government. The remnants of the Big Cheese conglomerates were scrapped together into a single state run company called the National Dairy Corporation(NDR) which was to have a monopoly on dairy production and marketing.

During the 2005 cheddar scarcity scare, the NDR released twenty thousand tons of cheddar from the vaults to supply local markets, food banks and individual families.
