After the Second Great War, the United Republic launched the Hammond Plan to aid in the reconstruction of war-torn Crona, Levantia, and Sarpedon. As geopolitical tensions between Urcea and Caphiria developed into what would become known as the Occidental Cold War, the U.R. would establish itself as one the major diplomatic arbiters of the new post-war global order, and would be one of the founding members of the League of Nations. Nevertheless, the United Republic engaged in regime change operations against left-wing governments in Crona and Audonia, fought conflicts like the Ulagan and Pankaran Wars and was a major competitor in the Space Race, eventually becoming the first nation to land people on the Moon in 1968. Domestically, the United Republic experienced economic growth, urbanization, and a rapid growth of its population following the Second Great War. The construction of the National Highway System and the renovation and expansion of the Alstinian Railway System transformed the nation's transportation infrastructure, and Veraise and Equetus were admitted as provinces, expanding the country's mainland borders.

The civil rights movement emerged, with William Lambert-Hensley becoming a prominent leader in the late 1950s. Beginning in 1962, President Albert Bates initiated what is known the "Grand Society", a series of sweeping legislation and policies aimed at addressing poverty, racial inequality, gender discrimination, wealth inequality and other social issues. The counterculture movement in Alstin brought significant social changes, including the liberalization of attitudes towards what substances are acceptable for recreational drug use, sexuality and the beginning of the modern gay rights movement as well as open defiance of the military draft and opposition to intervention in Pankara.

The United Republic brokered a number of peace agreements throughout the later half of the 20th Century that brought an end to several conflicts including the Istrenyan Crisis, the Mosquito War, and Asterian-Tierrador  War. After a surge in female labor participation throughout the 1970s, by 1980, the majority of women aged 16 and over were employed. The early 1970s saw economic stagflation and President Lilly Paulsen responded with a number of neoliberal reforms. The early 1980s saw the culmination of the Burgo-Caphirian Thaw and the signing of the Assumption Accords, marking the end of the Occidental Cold War in 1984.
