Kensonia is a state of the Kiravian Federacy located in the Western Highlands of Great Kirav. It borders Asperidan to the north and Kyllera to the south.

Politics and Governance

Kensonia's lawmaking body is the Kensonia State Assembly, which is eleced biennially by single transferable vote. Each countyship returns 5 members to the State Assembly. The legislature is nonpartisan and has a strong volunteer ethos. Assemblymen are granted a stipend of 3,000 plus coverage of closely-scrutinised travel and lodging expenses while the Assembly is in session.

Like other Western Highlands states, Kensonia allows for introduction of legislation by citizen initiatives and passage of legislation by referendum. All statewide elections are conducted entirely by post. Citizens may vote in countyship and local elections by post or in person.

The Chief Executive of Kensonia, more commonly referred to as the Governor, is elected every five years by plurality vote. Like the legislature, the Chief Executure is a nonpartisan office. It is not subject to term limits, but a Chief Executive who has been elected twice or more can be subjected to a recall election at anytime past the first year of a given term.

Kensonian political culture has strong libertarian conervative and populist underpinnings, reflecting a society that values self-reliance and harbours feelings of distrust and alienation in regard to centralised authorities and institutions. In federal elections, the state is a stronghold for the Kiravian Free Alliance. Socialist movements had been popular in Kensonian mining- and metallurgy-oriented communities through the early phase of the Kiravian Union, but Kensonians working in these industries began to feel betrayed and exploited by the Party toward the middle of the Kirosocialist period when greater strains on the command economy became apparent.

Society & Culture

Kaskans, Antaric subgroubs such as the Dārskans, weird Coscivian tribes, Uroms. Areas with a strong mining heritage are heavily populated by the descendants of migrants from other regions, including many North Coscivians, Kir people, Róvanic Coscivians, and Ĥeiran Coscivians.

Economy

Mining continues to form the backbone of the Kensonian economy, taking advantage of deposits of titanium, nickel, uranium, thorium, and silver found in the state's mountains, as well as iron deposits in the southern edge of the Steel Mountains that run into the state's northeastern quarter. Over time, improved automation has decreased the number of Kensonians directly employed by the mining industry, but minerals account for a majority of the state's export earnings. Forestry accounts for the second-largest share of export revenues, consisting mostly of unprocessed softwood timber from the state's coniferous alpine forests.

Many Kensonians practice subsistence agriculture, but the state's mountainous terrain and rather poor soils have inhibited the development of a significant commercial farming sector.

With the advent of air travel making the state more accessible to Kiravians from the coastal states, tourism has grown into a major industry in Kensonia. According to the Executive for Business & Travel Promotion, over a million tourists (equivalent to just over 1/4 of the resident population) visit the state annually to take advantage of Kensonia's many ski and alpine resorts, scenic state and national parks, historical sites relating to the colonisation of the Western Highlands, craft breweries, and Urom gambling houses.
