The Federal People's Army, or FPA, is the armed forces of the Republic of the Union of Orenstia. It comprises the service branches of the Federal People's Ground Forces, the Federal People's Navy and the Federal People's Air Force, with two additional services under direct federal control and devolved republic control respectively, the  Federal People's Strategic Forces and the People's National Guard. Although the President of Orenstia is the de-jure commander-in-chief, the National Council holds the de-facto power; as it is constitutionally charged with “leading the armed forces”. Units of the Federal People's Army are divided along five military districts based on geographical location.

A 12-15 month period of service in the Federal People's Army is mandatory for all Orenstian citizens between 18 and 35, although today it offers non-combat, civil defence and national service roles to a majority of conscripts. The FPA reached its peak of over 4 million active personnel in 1982, and today it maintains a more professional, largely volunteer force of 0.9 million active personnel. It has a budget of $195 billion, amounting to 2% of the Orenstian gross domestic product.

The Federal People's Army encompasses five major service branches; the Ground Forces, the Navy, the Air Force, Strategic Forces and the National Guard. Following reforms passed in 1995, the FPA has reduced conscript numbers and consequently troop numbers, and is today a largely professional volunteer force. These reductions have allowed for more funds to be diverted from the traditionally large Ground Force to the Navy, Air Force and Strategic Forces.

Ground Forces

A T-16 tank.

The Federal People's Ground Forces (FPGF) is the land force of the FPA. It comprises over 400,000 servicemembers, approximately 40% of the FPA's total active military forces. During times of war, the ground forces would be reinforced by the People's National Guard. Since 1957, the doctrine of the Federal People's Ground Forces has been heavily focused on mechanized warfare. Therefore, a majority of the FPGF's brigades are mechanized or armoured, with the force operating over 4,500 main battle tanks and over 6,000 armoured personnel carriers.

Although once historically dominant and comprising of over 70% of the nation's active military servicemembers, the ground forces of today have been largely reduced as relations with neighbouring Levantine Union states have steadily improved. Nevertheless, investment into technology-intensive elements such as surface to air missiles, army aviation as well as integrated communication systems has increased.

The Federal People's Ground Forces are subdivided into six branches of service: the Motorized Rifle Troops, the Federal Armoured Forces, the Federal Artillery Forces, the Orenstian Special Forces, the Orenstian Engineering Troops and the Federal Logistical Forces.

Navy

An FPN SSBN in Inari.

Once subordinate to the ground forces, the Federal People's Navy (FPN) has undergone rapid modernization on its strives to become a blue-water navy. The 200,000 strong Federal People's Navy is divided into three fleets, the Northern Fleet headquartered in Kuressi, the Eastern Fleet headquartered in Versend, and the Southern Fleet, headquartered in Trondstrøm. It maintains a significant land-based (and increasing sea-based) Naval Aviation force. Since 2015, it has begun to operate an increasing number of nuclear submarines and has commissioned its first true aircraft carriers.

Air Force

An LTK-29 in FPAF service.

The Federal People's Air Force (FPAF) is the air force of the Federal People's Army. The force comprises 190,000 servicemembers and is divided into 34 air divisions. Following the 1995 doctrinal shift, the Federal People's Air Force is now one of the most important components of the armed forces; responsible for maintaining air superiority, launching strikes and supporting ground and naval forces in a combined-arms approach. Although land-based naval aircraft and conventional strategic long-range aviation remain under the de-jure control of the Navy and the Strategic Forces, they are de-facto placed under the command of the Air Force. In addition, the FPAF is responsible for coordinating the air defence of Orenstia. The FPAF now operates 5th generation fighter aircraft.

Strategic Forces

A Strategic Forces bomber.

The 100,000 strong Federal People's Strategic Forces (FPSF) is the nation's strategic force. Not only does it maintain the nation's land-based nuclear and conventional strategic missiles, it also operates the nation's nuclear-armed long-range aviation. Therefore, it controls two out of the three components of the nuclear triad. It is also responsible for space operations, although that has remained limited. The Federal People's Strategic Forces is the newest out of the five branches, formed in 1977 after the detonation of Orenstia's first nuclear device.

It is considered the most important component of the Federal People's Army, and is therefore under the direct control of the National Council as an independent branch.

National Guard

The People's National Guard is a limited ground force under the control of republic governments. Once influential, the components of the National Guard today are largely conscript and paramilitary.

Anthems

The anthem of the Federal People’s Army is the March on Versend, referencing a major battle during the Orenstian Civil War which saw the then Revolutionary Red Army gain control over much of peninsular Varska. It was composed in 1934.

Only the Federal People’s Navy and the Federal People’s Air Force have their own discrete anthems, being Sailor’s Glory and the national march, The March of the Aviators, respectively. The March of the Aviators is also used by the Naval and Strategic Aviation units of the other components of the armed forces.
