Wilderness years
The so-called "wilderness years" of Gassavelia represent its period as a disunited series of polities which, although functionally part of Urcea, were largely separate and ruled individually by the Apostolic King of Urcea. Due to the destruction of the Kingdom faced in the later years of the Great Confessional War and subsequent economic degradation of the Dragonnades, the Gassavelian counties were severely economically depressed. Unlike other parts of Levantia though, very few Protestants would leave the country for Pharisedoms as none existed for their people, instead with most accepting the Catholic faith but out-migration going to other places in Urcea due to the lack of food and employment. During the wilderness years, the territories were largely governed under the mistaken belief that they could be transitioned to a largely agricultural economy common throughout the rest of Levantia, leading to the destruction of many settlements where the rare viable, flat land needed existed. Efforts to grow rice in the area were unsuccessful during the 17th and 18th centuries.

'75 Rising
The significant and lasting economic deprivation in the Gassavelian duchies lead to unrest and resentment among the population, and a popular uprising began in 1675, which was the hundredth anniversary of the destruction of the Kingdom. While revolts and minor uprisings had been common in the region since 1610, the '75 Rising was the first coordinated mass uprising requiring a significant commitment of the Royal Army.
Following the victory of Royal forces in 1679, it was decided reprisals would be light and most leaders of the revolt were returned to their homes following the conflict. The end of the war would begin a century of conciliatory efforts by the Government of Urcea to integrate the Gassavelians. In 1690, the Apostolic King granted a fishing monopoly to several Gassavelian firms off the southern coast of the Kingdom, a policy which would significantly improve the economic situation in the coastal part of the Gassavelian realms.
Southern Reform Act of 1755
Seven decades following the Gassavelian uprising, the newly empowered Concilium Daoni passed the Southern Reform Act of 1755, making significant changes to the administration of the duchies as well as adding some economic relief measures, including a significant reduction of internal tariffs in the area.
Reorganization
Reorganization
The wilderness years ended with the Administrative Reorganization Act of 1892, which reunited the duchies and counties with significant historical populations of Gassavelian people in them as the State of Gassavelia. Much of the lightly populated southern coast which had traditionally been part of the Kingdom of Gassavelia was separated out to form the eastern half of the province of Sanctissimo Sacramento, while some of the outlying parts of the Gassavelian cultural sphere became the province of New Audonia, as the majority of this province was not part of the historic Kingdom and Gassavelians formed only a plurality there.
