The Holy League was a coalition of Catholic members within the Holy Levantine Empire during the mid-16th century who were joined together for the purposes of defending the Empire generally and the Catholic ascendancy within it specifically. Unlike its opposition, the Protestant Union, the Holy League had no central leadership but was a coalition of many different members of the Kingdom of Dericania and principalities within future Fiannria. The Holy League was established in response to the creation of the Protestant Union as a way to coordinate the Catholic war effort during the Great Confessional War and protect the lands and territories of its constituent members. It was dissolved with the Catholic victory during the Great Confessional War, and its members - especially those founding families and princes of the League - benefitted from the war greatly, gaining the lands and territories of disinherited Protestant lords.
