Scholars believe the modern monastic organization was established in the 2nd or 3rd century AD, gradually displacing other religious and mythical worship sites at the base of the mountain. A large stone monastery-pyramid was constructed in the 5th century, but an earthquake in the early 8th century rendered it unstable.
