This quote by Jan Blokker aptly illustrates that when we talk about 'history', we both refer to what actually happened in the past and to the manner in which that past is described by the historian.

History refers in the first place to the discipline that deals with the study of chronological order of events, relying on a critical investigation of sources. The intention is to gain insight into cultures and peoples from the past. History in the broad sense also refers to everything that has taken place in the past, including all phenomena that change, with or without human beings.
