Summary

Description

Gulf of Mexico (view from the southern end of Cayo Costa Island, Florida, USA) (December 2008).

The Gulf of Mexico is a large, irregularly elliptical ocean basin with a short axis of about 550 miles and a long axis of over 1000 miles. It is located between Mexico and Florida & between Texas-Louisiana and Cuba. The basin formed during the Mesozoic as the ancient supercontinent Pangaea rifted apart during the Late Triassic and Jurassic.
