The Pello STV-244 (Standard Transport Volar 224) is a Urcean four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed and built originally by the Pello Corporation. Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the STV-244 was originally designed as a troop, medevac, and cargo transport aircraft. The versatile airframe has found use as a platform for a variety of other roles, including as a gunship, for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refueling, maritime patrol, and aerial firefighting. It is now the main tactical airlifter for several military forces worldwide. More than 40 variants of the 244, including civilian versions, operate around the world.

Introduced in the 1950s to replace several Second Great War-era models of military transport aircraft, the STV-244 soon became the standard for the Royal Air Force, making the varied types and sizes of transport introduced during the war mostly obsolete.

Notable STV-224 Variants

  • SFTV-244: Family of tactical tanker aircraft, provide aerial refueling capabilities to light aircraft and helicopters.
  • SATV-244: Aerial gunship variant. Comes armed with a single 75mm light howitzer, a 25mm autocannon and six hardpoints for smart weapons on the outer wings. A targeting pod under the left wing of the aircraft provides targeting capability.
  • SETV-244A: Airborne Battlefield Command and Control (ABCCC) version of the standard STV-244 design. This aircraft provides a mobile tactical control center that gives battlefield commanders the opportunity to monitor a wide conflict area from a centralized position. Special equipment includes electronic communications, command and control equipment.
  • SETV-244B: A Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) variant aimed at broadcast missions in the standard AM, FM, HF, TV and military communications bands. Aircraft acts as a mobile broadcasting stations with long loiter times that allow continuous broadcasting of desired communications.
  • SETV-244C: An electronic jamming platform aimed at providing large scale electronic warfare capabilities. Aircraft contain a broad array of jamming equipment to control a hostile force's ability to communicate effectively. Aside from pure jamming, these aircraft can deploy counterinformation and electronic attack tactics as well, overwhelming enemy sensors or spoofing them with false information.
