While studying at the Imperial University in Trossera, Bastiano Caladri witnessed the rapid development and spread of the [[Social Renovation Movement]], which inspired him to found a similar organization to drive the rights of Montanaros in Aciria. Upon returning to his hometown and the capital of Santa Beatrice, Chegallari, he began the efforts of bringing together educated Montanaros from various clans to create a base for a Montanaro identity and nation with art and literature.

Caladri continued as the leader of the UML until his death in 1971, with him being described as the father of the Montanaro people in his efforts of creating a Montanaro identity that united all Montanaros over identifying with their respective clans. The current leader of the UML is Ugo Acharigi.
The League also maintains strong ties to the [[Montanaran Unity Party]] (PUM), which is a provincial party that advocates for Montanaro's independence, albeit is much more ultranationalistic than its federal counterpart, but the two parties are primarily independent from one another. The United Montanarans League (Montanaran: Liga a Montaraloru Unitã; Pelaxian: Liga de Montanaros Unidos) is a political party in Pelaxia promoting Montanaro nationalism and Montanaro independence. The League was formed by Montanaran members of the Federal Congress who were a part of the New Social Generation which had emerged in the 1960s as part of the Montanaran Renaissance. Founder Costa Diamanti had been a part of the constitutional convention for Pelaxia's fifth republican constitution.

The primary purpose of the League is to serve as the primary vehicle for Montanaran interests in the Federal Parliament and seeks to ensure the eventual independence of Montanaro from Pelaxia. Indeed, the LMU exclusively campaigns within Montanaro during federal elections. The LMU is noted for being supportive of social democratic and nationalistic policies with some factions even supporting democratic socialism and ultranationalism. Under the current socialist federal government in Pelaxia, the LMU has moderated its approach towards Montanaro nationalism thanks to concessions and lack of hostilities from the Social-Labourist Movement (MSO) with the LMU even participating in MSO-led coalitions.

The League also maintains strong ties to the Montanaran Unity Party (PUM), which is a provincial party that advocates for Montanaro's independence, albeit is much more ultranationalistic than its federal counterpart, but the two parties are primarily independent from one another. Regardless, both parties enjoy support from a wide range of Montanaran voters ranging from conservative farmers to far-right clericalists, and from politically moderate technocrats to left-wing trade unionists. Most analysts have considered the two parties to be conundrums due to their very broad range of support despite being a party with mostly left-wing sympathies.
