Alahuela Mobilidade

Alahuela Mobilidade (English: Alahuela Mobility), often referred to by its acronym, AM, and occasionally by a colloquial portmanteau, AlaMo, is the public agency responsible for operating transit services in the National Metro area, also known as Greater Alahuela. A tri-jurisdictional agency, Alahuela Mobilidade was formed via an agreement between the states of Alexandria and Verona with the city of Alahuela in 1917 as the Capital Area Transit System and began operating buses between LaMarque, Alahuela, and Saint Tomás, as well as a streetcar on the coastline between Tarracante and Águasmaresias. Over the years, AM expanded its operations, driven by strategic investments and technological advancements, to become the second-largest transit agency in Cartadania. Governed by a board that includes representatives from both states and the city, AM is funded through a combination of state and municipal contributions, federal grants and allocations, and farebox revenue. The agency is a key player in the region’s economic development, reducing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable mobility by integrating bus, light rail, heavy rail (subway), and commuter rail services.

In addition to its direct operations, Alahuela Mobilidade plays a key role in funding and coordinating transit services that extend beyond its primary network. This includes contributions to Pantanal Sprinter commuter rail service, which links the suburban areas of Alexandria along the Mendes River, south of Alahuela, directly to the city, offering a critical transportation alternative for daily commuters who do not live within AM's service area and otherwise would need to commute closer to a park and ride at best or into the city itself at worst. Furthermore, the agency provides paratransit services to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities, as ensuring compliance with accessibility standards has been a high-ticket issue in recent decades. The system has the second-highest ridership in the country, with about 3.7 million daily riders and 1.351 billion annual rides in 2030. As of 2030, Alahuela Mobilidade operates in Alahuela proper, as well as the Alexandria counties of Lanora, Nike, Rieti, Saint Isabel, and Zentera, and the Verona counties of Arrechia, Cara, Glade, and Isabel.
