The primary purpose of the League is to serve as the primary vehicle for Montanaran interests in the Federal Parliament and seeks to ensure the eventual independence of Montanaro from Pelaxia. Indeed, the LMU exclusively campaigns within Montanaro during federal elections. The LMU is noted for being supportive of social democratic and nationalistic policies with some factions even supporting democratic socialism and ultranationalism. Under the current socialist federal government in Pelaxia, the LMU has moderated its approach towards Montanaro nationalism thanks to concessions and lack of hostilities from the Social-Labourist Movement (MSO) with the LMU even participating in MSO-led coalitions.
The League also maintains strong ties to the Montanaran Unity Party (PUM), which is a provincial party that advocates for Montanaro's independence, albeit is much more ultranationalistic than its federal counterpart, but the two parties are primarily independent from one another. Regardless, both parties enjoy support from a wide range of Montanaran voters ranging from conservative farmers to far-right clericalists, and from politically moderate technocrats to left-wing trade unionists. Most analysts have considered the two parties to be conundrums due to their very broad range of support despite being a party with mostly left-wing sympathies.
History
The United Montanarans League was formed in 1983 as an electoral alliance of Montanaran members of the Federal Congress who were part of an informal group known as the New Social Generation. The New Social Generation emerged in the 1960s as part of the Montanaran Renaissance, which saw Montanaran society undergo sweeping socio-political changes away from both the Caphiric Church, which had long dominated Montanaran society, and the traditional left–right political spectrum. The latter would see the rise in a new political spectrum: between patriotism, which supports remaining a province of Pelaxia and maybe gain further autonomy, and nationalism, which supports seceding from Pelaxia. The nationalist faction was initially exclusive to left-wing groups such as the Frontul di Libirari di Montaro, but after the 1960s nationalism was separated from the traditional spectrum and instead gained support from ideologues who once opposed it. Similarly, the goals of the nationalists were moderated to further its appeal; instead of unilateral independence, nationalists now called for a more gradual approach to legitimise their cause on the electoral level and to eventually hold a referendum which upon its hypothetical success would see the Montanaran government negotiate with the Pelaxian government to secure its eventual independence.
In the 1980s, during the Years of Steel, nationalist sentiment in Montanaro was at its highest due to increasing opposition towards the heavy-handed nature of the Pelaxian government's measures towards regionalist groups. This led to Costa Diamanti, one of the drafters of the fifth republican constitution of Pelaxia and one of the main supporters of the parliamentary system and a ceremonial presidency, to establish a new federal-level political party to bring forth Montanaran interests on the federal level, which he felt had largely been neglected by most political parties. As the Pelaxian government was under a moderate right-wing christian democratic party, the new party took on a moderate left-wing alignment, but otherwise its position of the traditional left-right political axis was largely seen as irrelevant to Diamanti and other party members; their main goal was to secure Montanaro's independence and the nascent LMU campaigned heavily on being a party of Montanaran interests, thus allowing it to secure a wide range of supports amongst the Montanaran populace.
