History

The Magnian Hockey Fund (1332-1602)

Coinciding with the finalization of the Kingdom of Magnia, the Magnian Hockey Fund was created by Franciscu Apian with the help of his closest nobles in an effort to bring up morale in a war-torn colony. After the closing of the Second Gabbenian War, the new Kingdom of Magnia had a diseased riddled, hungry, and weak population. All of the colonies resources and infrastructure had been used to defend against the brutal Mortropivs and Lacronitine, leaving little left to work with. Luckily, the colony still had many towns with a populace strong enough to maintain the economy, and Franciscu Apian knew the people deserved something to do in their free time.

When the Magnian Hockey Fund was established its popularity grew like wildfire. Local teams were established and rushed to join as fast as they could. Originally the Magnain Hockey Fund lacked structure, with teams challenging each other whenever the pleased, but it quickly became more formal as divisions were made based on the regional and provincial divisions of Magnia.

Northern Hockey Union Restructuring

Hockey expanded in popularity as Coscivian settlers spread into Upper and Central Kirav. Dotted with thousands of lakes as a result of extensive glaciation during the last polar maximum, and with a climate ranging from cool humid continental to hemiboreal to subarctic, these regions of the island continent were ideal for making hockey an important pastime and fixture of the local lifestyle.

The first Kiravian teams to join the Boreal Hockey League as such did so as a result of the 21XXX restructuring of the Northern Hockey Union. Unlike most modern sports leagues, the NHU did not (and still does not) make use of a general draft system for allocating new talent among clubs. Instead, clubs could only recruit players from their respective "territories" (roughly corresponding to their market areas, with the exact boundaries and criteria for player "residency" determined by a complex and archæic title of the league bylaws), which had changed little since the 1600s anno Domini. The NHU's conferences and divisions, dating from a time when long-distance travel was much more arduous and time-consuming (especially during the winter months) were purely geographic. Under these conditions, four teams - the Xūrosar Skuas, Escarda Hailstorms, Valēka Cutlasses, and Ketaya Chieftains - routinely won their divisions for decades (with the Skuas and Cutlasses having a ten-year streak each), and the league championship essentially rotated among these four teams. Long-simmering frustration among the owners of the less-dominant franchises and concerns about declining revenues for the league overall due to competition from the more dynamic Seaboard Hockey League and college hockey came to a head in 21XXX during the annual owners' conclave, where the owners of the less successful teams voted as a bloc to expel the Skuas, Hailstorms, Cutlasses, and Chieftains from the NHU. Instead of folding, the four teams played a truncated season of games against each other as the Élite Hockey League while collectively negotiating entry into the Boreal Hockey League.

Conferences and Divisions

The Boreal Hockey League features two conferences and four divisions. As Diamavya has the largest amount of teams in the BHL the conferences and divisions are based on provincial and regional divisions of Diamavya. All the divisions contain a fairly similar number of teams and share an equal viewership, as all the divisions are extremely skilled, competitive, and feature multiple nations.

Complications with overseas territories

Some problems have arisen with the presence of overseas territories in the BHL, namely those in the Taínean Sea and Odoneru Ocean. As these territories are extremely far away, they face significant advantages or disadvantages depending on whether they are playing a home game or not. This problem isn't experienced when the territories are competing against one another, but it is blatantly apparent when they compete against their mainland rivals. Teams have to travel to entirely different continents just to face each other, and the BHL is still in the process of solving this issue. The teams from the overseas territories that are featured in the league are highly skilled, but at the same time, not numerous enough to form their own league.
