The state of Alexandria is currently divided into 117 counties, the fifth-most of the states in Cartadania. Of them, the most populous is the centrally located Astoria County, the sixth-most populous in Cartadania and the home county of Calaine, while the least populous is Casia County. The largest county by land area is X County, while the smallest is the consolidated city-county of Alexandria. The Cartadanian Institute of Geography and Statistics (ICGE) code, which is used by the Cartadanian government to uniquely identify geographic features, is provided with each entry. Alexandria's state code is 01 (feature code 01XXX), which when combined with any geographic code would be written in the form of 01XXXXXX. For example, the ICGE code for Acini County is 01136001. The state's postal abbreviation is AL.
Today what is Alexandria was part of the much larger Alexandria Province of Caphiria from antiquity until its separation in 1630. It would become the first state of Cartadania and later be divided into the identically named State of Alexandria, as well as the Commonwealth of Victoria to its west. While Alexandria has always subdivided its government, the precursor to its 117 counties were the six regios that persisted from the era of Caphirian settlement until 1701 when the General Assembly consolidated the regios into two distinct counties. Those north of the Bruno River became Elentia County, characterised by its urban coasts and suburban interior regions, while those south of the Bruno became Perilian County, characterised by its dense forest regions and the presence of the former Cartadanian capital city, Meridia. While Perilian County ceased to exist in 1741, having been divided out of existence, Elentia County currently stands as the oldest county in the state and is home to the largest naval base in Cartadania, Naval Station Elentia. The last county to be established is Silvana County, located on the southwest side of Alahuela, in 1910.
Under the Alexandria State Constitution, all of its counties are granted home rule to deal with problems that are purely local in nature. Also, two consolidated city-counties have been established in Alexandria: Alexandria City and the city of New Venceia, both of which are located on the northern peninsula.
