A worn copy of the Iyagi-seda.

The Iyagi-Seda is the oldest extant book of classical Metzettan history, published in 740 BC. It begins with the Metzettan creation myth (Chulcheo) explaining the origin of the world. It goes on to recount several lesser myths and includes an extensive genealogy of the Metzettan Imperial Family. It describes episodes from Metzettan history and diplomatic contacts with other countries. Some obscure early Emperors are known only from the Iyagi-seda.

"Iyagi-seda" has been variously translated into English as "Fierce History" and "Origin of Power/Strength." Modern translations are usually released under the native name.

The writing of the Iyagi-seda began under Empress Kukki, and was completed under her successor Emperor Gwe.

Process of Compilation

Empress Kukki ordered 12 people, including her eldest daughter, to compile the history of the Empire into one text. The work was not completed in her lifetime, however Emperor Gwe, her son and successor on the throne ensured work continued to completion in her honour. Kukki and Gwe ensured that Emperor Raezae, their father and grandfather respectively, received what they considered to be an appropriate level of focus in the work.
