Paopatra
Paopatra ("oceanolatry" in High Coscivian) or nādrūgoan ("drowning-cult") is a religious tradition conserved in some Coscivian societies, centred on the worship of Mother Ocean as the dominant force in the natural world.
The Ocean [in Paopatra] is the Alpha and Omega, and the source and ultimate devourer of all life. The central principle in paopatra is submission to the unpredictable and uncontrollable Ocean rather than seeking Her mercy or favour. Events like shipwrecks, drownings, tsunamis, and floods are celebrated as returning people to the Ocean. Understandably this freaks most people out, so paopatra has been a rather low-profile, underground, and sometimes persecuted movement for at least three thousand years. A select few Sea Coscivian clans are the only groups with paopatra as their community religion, but there are small, informal groups and solo practitioners scattered across most coastal and island areas.
