Santarém, officially the State of Santarém (Cartadanian: Estado de Santarém), is a state located on the western coast of mainland Cartadania. It is the sixth-most populous Cartadanian state as well as the third-most extensive, after Verona and Santiago. The state capital, Vila Real, is located in the central part of the state, within the Piedmont region. Vila Real is also the state's largest city with an estimated 984,213 people as of 2023. The state has been very popular among Cartadanians and foreigners alike due to its growing openness for startups and entrepreneurs. The state has many incentives to start businesses locally as well as for existing businesses looking to relocate to the state. Vila Real's carnival festival, the second-largest in Cartadania, has caused a spike in the state's tourism industry, and as a result of reinvestment and diversification of it's economy, Santarém is the fourth-richest state in Cartadania per capita as of January 2024.
