The agricultural sector accounts for a large percentage of the territory's GDP. A fruit industry is becoming established, with hundreds of hectares in the coastal lowlands being planted with peach and other stonefruit, persimmon, and kiwis. Limited breadfruit production has begun in some areas of the northern islands, and there are several initiatives underway to establish vineyards in the more southerly isles.
