The Saxalins are part of the Australic biogeographic realm and floristic kingdom. Millions of years ago, the climate in Australis was warmer than in human memory, and the continent was able to support vascular flora well into the {{wp|Neogene}}. This included forests of {{wp|podocarps}} and {{wp|southern beech}}. Global climatic shifts caused Australis to become much colder. Australic flora (with the exception of lichens, mosses, liverworts, and the like) subsequently died out in polar Australis, but is still an important component of the flora of the Saxalins, [[Peratra]], and [[Argaea]]. Endemism on the Saxalins is further intensified by its isolation from other hospitable landmasses.
