A majority of modern linguists believe the word is rooted in the proto-Istroyan word "''*serḱ-''" and "''ὅρκος''", "erkos", which in modern Istroyan means to fence or an object by which an oath is taken; those same linguists are deeply divided, however, on why this name was applied to the island. A popular but very controversial theory was that Herciana, as an island on the northeastern edge of Sarpedon, was said to "fence" the mainland in along with the other islands.
