Parameters

Image, common name, and footnotes are optional. All other fields listed above are required, but should be left blank if no data is available.

  • imageoptional – The image name must be given in the form Fossil Example.jpg or Fossil_Example.jpg; the Image: or File: prefixes must not be used. Image size is automatically determined by the infobox.
  • catalog number – The fossil's catalog number.
  • common nameoptional – The fossil's common name. If used, the common name takes preference over the catalog number as the name appearing in bold at the top of the infobox. Otherwise, the catalog number is used.
  • species – Use italics and the full species name, e.g. Australopithecus afarensis.
  • age – Use the commonly accepted age of the fossil or a range in cases of uncertainty, e.g. 3.2 million years, 680,000–780,000 years.
  • place discovered – Preferred format: city or region, sovereign state. Note: Do not add flag icons.
  • date discovered – The complete date is preferred, e.g. 24 November 1974. Use the month-day-year format for fossils from parts of the world where the month precedes the day in a date.
  • discovered by – The individual(s) who discovered the fossil.
  • footnotesoptional – Notes about any of the infobox data.
