The Coronation of the Imperator (Caphiric Latin: Adsequela) is the official ceremony in which the Imperator of Caphiria is formally confirmed, crowned, and enthroned as the monarch of the Imperium of Caphiria.

The coronation is a symbolic formality and does not signify the official beginning of the Imperator's reign; de jure and de facto their reign commences from the moment of the preceding Imperator's death, maintaining the legal continuity of the state. While Caphiria's rulers have had coronation rituals going back to the First Imperium, the modern ceremony traces its origin to Imperator Șerossaccir in the late 13th century. After the Great Schism of 1615, the coronation evolved into a complex religious act of consecration involving rites and rituals that took place in other Christian monarchies.

The coronation usually takes place in March following the accession, a tradition going back since the 14th century. There are four major phases of the coronation: the Consecrations, the Recognitions, the Anointment, and the Crowning and Enthronement.

Preparations

The committee's work requires extensive communication and collaboration among its members, as well as with other government agencies and external stakeholders. To ensure the smooth execution of the ceremony, the committee typically meets regularly to discuss the progress of its various tasks and to make any necessary adjustments to the plan.

As the highest religious authority, The Patriarch of Venceia and All Sarpedon is entrusted with invoking God's blessings and grace upon the Imperator. He plays a crucial role during the anointment. His involvement bridges the divine and earthly realms, reinforcing the idea that the Imperator's role is both spiritual and secular. The Patriarch wears intricate liturgical vestments in gold and deep red. The mitre (a ceremonial headpiece) is adorned with jewels, and the crozier he carries is an ancient artifact, believed to be from the time of the First Imperium. The Prime Minister oversees the ceremonies' administrative aspects, ensuring everything runs smoothly. The Prime Minister might also offer a formal salute or pledge of allegiance to the Imperator during the Recognitions. The Prime Minister wears an elegant uniform, reminiscent of ancient Caphiric attire but modernized. It is typically in muted colors with badges and medals signifying their office. The First Tribune and Senate President - symbolizing the legislative branch and the continuity of law and governance under the new Imperator, wear robes that echo the design of ancient senators. As the Imperator enters the cathedral, it's customary for the Prime Minister, the First Tribune, and the Senate President to approach him/her in a preordained sequence, extending a formal greeting. This order has been upheld for centuries, symbolizing the respect and deference the government pays to the crown. The aristocracy, in a specific pecking order, approaches the Imperator. The highest-ranking aristocrat - the patriarch of the last Estate who was on the throne - goes first, presenting their symbolic gift with a rehearsed phrase that encapsulates its significance. As each aristocrat presents their gift, they take a half step back and bow, symbolizing their subservience to the crown.

Foreign dignitaries, although not directly interacting with the rituals, are individually acknowledged by the Imperator with a nod or a hand gesture, showing appreciation for their presence and reinforcing diplomatic ties.

The Coronation

Pre-ceremony

The days leading up to the coronation are marked by nationwide preparations and festivities. Streets are adorned with banners and flags bearing the emblem of the Imperium, while homes and public buildings are festively decorated. Pre-ceremony events are as much for the public as they are for the aristocracy and the Imperator. This is seen as a spiritual preparation for the heavy responsibility the Imperator will soon bear. The cathedral where the coronation is to be held undergoes its own ritual. In a solemn tradition, the princeps juventatis will visit the Hall of Imperators, where the statues or tombs of previous rulers stand. On the eve of the coronation, several things happen: in a (mostly) unified act, the majority of the Imperium shuts of their lights, save for a single beacon pointed in the cardinal direction of Venceia. This symbolizes the guiding light of the Imperator that will lead the Imperium to greater heights, as well as a symbol of that city's love and hope being shone to the capital. The princeps juventatis spends time in solitude or with close family, reflecting on the path ahead. Simultaneously, the cathedral is prepared, with the final touches being put in place, and the artifacts, throne, and other ceremonial items being arranged. As dawn breaks on coronation day, a solemn yet hopeful chime of bells resonates - not just from the cathedral in Venceia but in every cathedral of the Imperium. It is a sound that stirs the soul, marking the beginning of a momentous day.

Ceremony

As first light pierces the horizon, Venceia is already abuzz with activity. The resonating chimes have set the pace for the day, filling every heart with a mix of reverence and excitement. The streets, vibrant with festivity the previous day, now have a different aura. There's a solemnity, an undercurrent of anticipation. Thousands gather around the cathedral, while countless more are positioned across the city, eyes glued to screens, ready to witness history unfold. The grand doors of the cathedral stand open, inviting in not just the physical participants but also centuries of traditions, hopes, and the spirit of an entire nation. Inside, the atmosphere is thick with incense and anticipation. A chorus is softly humming, filling the vast space with an ethereal melody that seems to bridge time.

The Imperator, the Patriarch, the dignitaries, and the other key participants have already begun to assemble, each finding their designated spots, standing in a tableau that represents the complex hierarchy and history of the Imperium.

Consecrations

The first and foremost act in the ceremony is the consecration. With the Imperator standing at the heart of the cathedral, surrounded by the pillars of the state, the consecration signifies the divine approval and blessings for the princeps juventatis to ascend as the Imperator. As the princeps juventatis stands, poised and solemn, a procession of priests emerges, their robes shimmering in the candlelight. They circle the heir, swinging censers with deliberate grace. The aromatic incense envelops the princeps, symbolizing not only their purification but also the ascension of their intentions and prayers to the divine.

Crowning and Enthronement

Amidst a hushed awe, a small procession wearing all purple emerges from the cathedral’s side entrance. They bear the treasures from the Imperial Collection of Caphria's Crown Jewels, emblematic of the Imperium's grandeur and the role of the Imperator:

• The Imperial Crowns: While many exist, one is chosen for the day, glistening with history, symbolism, and the aspirations of the Imperium.
• The Shield of State: Crafted from metals mined from Caphiria’s most ancient regions, this shield isn't meant for battle but symbolizes the Imperator's role as the defender of the realm.

In parallel, a randomly-selected legionary, carrying with him the hopes of every soldier, offers the Ceremonial Sword, underscoring the Imperator's ultimate command over the armed forces. With a choreography that's both graceful and solemn, select members of the Imperial family assist in draping the Mantle of Dominion over the shoulders of the Imperator, signifying the weight and expanse of the territories they now oversee.

The historic throne, an artifact crafted from stones from every corner of the Imperium, beckons. The Imperator, now fully adorned, ascends and takes their rightful place. With the Imperator seated, representatives from the diverse fabric of the Imperium – nobility, scholars, merchants, and commoners – come forward. Each offers their allegiance, to which the Imperator graciously accepts and vows to honor their bond. As the powerful chorus emerges, rising in harmony and intent, a collective prayer and affirmation enveloping the new Imperator resonates throughout the cathedral. After the prayer concludes, the choir begins to sing the national anthem of Caphiria, and everyone in attendance joins in unison.

Post-ceremony

The close of the coronation inside the cathedral doesn't mark the end of the day's rituals. Throughout Venceia and other cities in the Imperium, the streets come alive with festivals. Night markets, music performances, theatrical shows depicting historical events, and folk dances ensure that the celebratory spirit permeates every corner of the society.
