The Boreal Hockey League is a transnational professional ice hockey league in Faneria and Kiravia. Representing the highest level of play in the region of the world where hockey originated and has a deeply-embedded popular following, is one of the two strongest hockey leagues in the world in terms of stadium attendance, television viewership, and revenue, the other being the Orixtal Hockey League.
History
The BHL was formed in 1997 as a merger of the Kirav Hockey League and the [Fanerian predecessor].
The Kirav Hockey League had been salvaged from the ruins of the state-managed All-Union Hockey Championship, part of the Kiravian Union's Unified National Sporting System abolished by the Reform Act of 1994. Prime Executive Ivardus Kólsylvar's administration issued a decree releasing the major spectator sport leagues from government control and approving the privatisation of their constituent clubs on a franchise model by provincial governments. Later that same year, the new owners of the All-Union Championship clubs, most of which were investment groups backed by Fanerian, Kiravian Overseas, and South Cronan capital, changed the league's name to the KHL.
[History of Fanerian predecessor here]
The situation in 1997 leading to the merger was thus: To the KHL, association with the more established [Fanerian league] would allow franchise owners greater access to foreign investment and to managers with private sector experience. To the [Fanerian league], association with the KHL would bring exposure to a large and promising new market, as well as a vast pool of Kiravian players willing to work for dirt cheap.
