Geography

A woefully incomplete topographic map of Varisavia

Varisavia is broadly divided into two geographic regions: Lesser Varisavia, the peninsular western portion of the island that contributes over one third of the country's landmass, and Greater Varisavia, the eastern portion of the islands that contributes most of the remaining two-thirds.

Two major mountain ranges, the New East Highlands-New West Highlands cross the northern coasts of both Lesser and GreaterVarisavia, and along with the Thunderhead Mountains of Greater Varisavia, stand out as the country's most prominent topographic features. The New Highlands give the northern coast a heavily-indented outline marked by many fjords, inlets, and islands. Low hills and rolling plains cover much of the rest of the country. The famed rolling, green hills of the Shieldarm Peninsula are the eroded remnants of a much older mountain range, as are the Rauturin Islands to its south.

Though temperate throughout, Varisavia's varied topography produces a great deal of climatic variation, including a number of agriculturally-optimal microclimates. The short grasslands of the drier Hyrendan Valley, for exmple, are better-suited for the intensive grazing of beef cattle, while the upland meadows of the New Highlands better lend themselves as pastures for sheep and dairy cattle.

History

Varisavia was discovered on Ash Wednesday, 20956 by the Kiravian explorer Hūver I.S.A. Mālstroven.

The first permanent Coscivian settlement was founded in 21012 at Adhenmór, situated at the head of a sheltered inlet branching off of the Bay of Gray Terns. The first 300 colonists, regarded as Varisavia's Condárix Ránumaya ("Founding Surnames") were mostly landless but skilled agricultural labourers from Kiygrava, Arkvera, Róvidrea, Hiterna, Fariva, Ilánova, and Harma, with a handful from Etivéra and Hanoram.

Politics and Governance

Varisavia is a constitutional republic within the Kiravian Federacy, and its politics takes place within the framework prescribed by the Colonial Charter of Varisavia adopted in 21067.

Legislative power belongs to the Varisavian Stanora, which is elected every three years by single transferable vote. Its 100 seats are apportioned among the state's provinces according to population. As in most Kiravian states, Varisavia's Stanora fully controls the state's finances.

The First Executive of Varisavia is appointed every five years by the Prime Executive of the Kiravian Federacy on the advice of the Varisavian Stanora. The Stanora's nominee has been selected by a popular referendum using instant-runoff voting since 21118 as a matter of practice, and this procedure was formalised into law by an amendment to the Colonial Charter in 21174.

Administrative Divisions

Unlike most Kiravian federal subjects, which are divided directly into countyships, Varisavia is instead divided into provinces (ávlastaya) which are then subdivided into countyships. This additional level of governance reflects Varisavia's history as several separate colonies later consolidated into one. The provinces are governed by biennially-elected legislatures known as Provincial Congresses. Provincial governments are responsible for courts and police; regulating land use, business licensisng, building codes, and public utilities; the provision and maintenance of public schools, most major roads, and public parks, and other such functions that might be handled either at the state or local level in other states.

Varisavian countyships resemble rural townships in Central Great Kirav in their powers and responsibilities more than they resemble countyships in other states. In the presence of provinces and general absence of incorporated cities and towns, Varisavian countyships take on a more municipal character.

Economy

Varisavia has a diversified, rapidly developing economy based on services, heavy industry, agriculture, and mining.

The lion's share of industry in Varisavia is related to the processing of mineral and agricultural products into refined forms such as cast iron, metal ingots, prefabricated machine parts, liquefied natural gas, refined aluminium, rolled tin, flour, canola oil, and potato chips. These products are mostly passed on to Great Kirav for consumption or further industrial use, but are increasingly being put toward domestic use in higher-order industry as the economy develops. One of the fastest-growing industrial sectors is the production of consumer goods for export to the nearby colonies of Thenrya, Tiorentia, and Daridia. Varisavia's main industrial centres are Aðenmór, Valdēsar, and Ladraten.

Agriculture and mining historically dominated the state's economy, and both remain important today. Agricultural products arround for some 34% of the state's export earnings, with over 70% of agricultural exports sold in Great Kirav and most of the remainder sold in other Kiravian colonies. The state's varied temperate climate allows for the cultivation of a wide variety of crops, ranging from Coscivian food staples such as cale and potatoes to vegetables such as leeks, onions, radishes, turnips, fennel, arugula, cabbage, various cultivars of lettuce, to peas, chickpeas, and various beans; chestnuts and almonds, canola, and maize. Alfalfa is widely grown for domestic use as feed.

There is a small but growing viticultural sector, which mainly produces budget wines for export outside of the Federacy.
