Initially displaying Levantine kestrels, eagles, chickens, ducks, owls, rabbits, a fox, a seal in a bathtub and a turtle in a large bucket, concerns over animal welfare meant a decrease in the number of species at the benefit of better conditions for the remaining animals. The zoo expanded multiple times in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to accomodate more exhibits. From 1880-1883, the zoo hosted an "exotic peoples" exhibition containing two Daxians and three Loa who were ostensibly employees of the zoo. Starting in the early 1980s, Collinebourg Zoo has been undergoing renovations aimed at replacing older exhibits with enclosures which recreate animals' natural environments, giving a better lifestyle to the animals and a more realistic experience to visitors. The oldest building still in use, a stable for yaks, was erected in 1859.
