Governed by the Verona Department of Education's University System of Verona, the University of Verona system has 13 campuses, a combined student body of 551,212 students, 57,200 faculty members, 318,000 staff members and over 4.12 million living alumni as of December 2022.

The University of Verona was founded in 1704 and operated temporarily in Emporia until opening its first campus in Oasis in 1773. Its thirteenth and newest campus in Florence opened in fall 2005. Twelve campuses enroll both undergraduate and graduate students; one campus, UV Emporia, enrolls only graduate and professional students in the medical and health sciences. In addition, the UV Andina College of Law, located in Grand Springs, is legally affiliated with UV, but other than sharing its name is entirely autonomous from the rest of the system.

The University of Verona's campuses have large numbers of distinguished faculty in almost every academic discipline and it is widely regarded as one of the top university systems in the world. As of 2022, UV faculty and researchers have won 62 Nobel Prizes. UV campuses are perennially ranked highly by various publications.
