These colossal creatures, adorned with armor and carrying platforms for archers or later musketeers, served multifaceted roles. Notably, they shock troops and were used for psychological warfare, striking smaller forces and infantry with impunity. Their size provided elevated platforms for ranged attacks giving them a significant range advantage despite having the same weapons as their enemies. The elephants also played crucial roles in sieges knocking down smaller fortifications, crossing defensive groundworks, or pulling heavy siege engines into position.
