The Stenzan Armed Forces act as the official constitutional military for the Republic of Stenza. The force describes itself as mostly defensive, and is known for its rather timid ground forces compared to a strong naval force. The Stenzan Armed Forces are led by Stenza's National Defense Council,
Athiva, officially the Archontia of Athiva (Athivan: Αρχοντία τῆς Αθήβα), is an island country located off the coast of Sarpedon in the Istroyan Sea, consisting of the island Kleftos. It lies 450 km east of Caphiria 335 km north of Asteklion, with its closest point 173 km off of the coast of mainland Sarpedon. While its only official languages are Athivan and Istroyan, approximately ten percent of its population also speaks Acirian at least on a conversational level. Its capital and largest city is Kleftopolis.
a nine seat council with three representatives from each service branch. The military is fully integrated with all positions open to both men and women given they meet internal standards, and has been since 1967.

Army
Inhabited since at least 8300 BC, the island eventually gave rise to the ancient Athivan civilisation, which the modern state derives its name from. The civilisation's location on an island meant an eventual lack of resources, which in turn encouraged Athivans to acquire them from the mainland, giving rise to the highly-developed military culture that the Athivans were known for. During the Second Great War, a military coup lead by General Alkios Demethanos took over the government, leading the country until the Athivan Revolution in the late 60s. The Athivan Revolution then lead to the liberation of Athiva, giving rise to the Archontia of Athiva in 1969, which rules the country to this day.
Stenza's army is its oldest service branch, having existed as an unified force since 1811 when the Daxian Colonial government decided to raise a force made up of local conscripts with Daxian officers and NCO's. This force was effective enough in putting down any resistance during the colonial era, but eventually revolted against the Daxian government to start the Stenzan war of independence. The Stenzan Army was reformed upon gaining independence in 1921, and has existed in its current force since.

The Stenzan Army of today is a modern light mechanized force suited to Stenza's defense. The bulk of its forces are formed into (light) mechanized divisions, which are mobile enough to thrive in Stenza's somewhat difficult terrain. Three air mobile divisions, two airborne divisions, two mountain infantry divisions and a single armored division finish up Stenza's offensive capabilities on land. One interesting thing to note about Stenza's light mechanized divisions is their secondary role as Gendarmerie divisions, with the bulk of these divisions being absorbed from the old Stenzan Internal Forces, a paramilitary agency under the previous government. Divisions and units that are marked as Gendarmerie divisions can perform constitutional law enforcement duties all over Stenza.
A popular tourism spot, the Athivan economy has begun to grow with the rising service sector to accompany the otherwise agriculture dependent nation.
History
Antiquity
Little is known of the pre-Istroyan people that inhabited the island, but it's thought that Istroyans colonised the island roughly around the same period as the other islands in the region, such as Herciana, 18th or 17th century BC. The multiple colonies established on the island eventually began to fight over the limited resources on the island, with the polis of Athiva eventually rising above the others due to the sophisticated military culture they'd have developed. The unification of the island meant a time of relative peace, but the limited resources still meant disgruntled peasantry. The Archon of Athiva decided to take advantage of the infighting between the Sarpic tribes on the mainland, leading a small, elite army of 300 men to the mainland to seize coastal settlements for Athivan use. The great success of the campaigns not only boosted the Archons popularity, but the economy and wealth of the Archontia.

The Athivan military campaigns were limited to seizing and raiding coastal settlements until around 950 BC, when Athivan artifacts are discovered further inland. While many theories exist for what might've been the motivation for the Archon to push inland, it's generally accepted that the expansion wasn't caused by economic interests. It was during the further inland expansion when the Athivan relations with the neighbouring Messisorians began declining, with their interests clashing on the mainland. Initially allies and trade partners, the two had a divide following the Massacre of Hagenos, where Athivan historians wrote of a settler village being raided by Messisorian soldiers, mistaking it for a Sarpic one. The declining relations eventually culminated in the brief but bloody Pikralic War, which was followed by an uneasy peace between the two due to the mass migrations of Sarpic peoples coming from the west, presumably due to Caphirian expansion.

Aside from tis combat divisions, Stenza's military consists of multiple "commands" ran by generals that oversee specific parts of military operations. These commands are responsible for the training, functioning and oversight of various support functions while the units that perform these functions are usually part of combat divisions.
Second Great War
Athiva, then known as the Republic of Athiva, was ruled by a fairly successful democracy which had ruled since 1883. Staying neutral throughout the First Great War to focus on the development of its infrastructure and economy, President Empastiro who was in office during the years leading up to the Second Great War and its initial years was interested in joining the war to curry favour with the winning side. Described as a nationalist and an idealist, Empastiro had ignored how damaging the war would be to the nation economically and demographically, especially with its military equipment consisting mostly of outdated weapons from the First Great War. The military eventually found out about Empastiro's ambitions, and staged a coup to overthrow the President. General Demethanos, already a popular figure with the people, assumed a leadership position in the nation, declaring that the military intends to only hold power for the duration of the Second Great War, holding free elections after the end of the conflict to ensure no foreign influence in the election.

Stenza's Army is a full time voluntary force with a major reserve component. Most army divisions are only staffed to a third of their normal wartime strength, with the other two thirds being drawn from reservists. Reservists are obliged to train for two weekends a month and two large exercises per year, with the government offering free education to every member of Stenza's military reserve.
Demethanos then passed in 1951, with his second in command, Myriolio assumed office, but after the end of the war, refused to give up power, claiming it to be in interest of the people due to foreign influence in the nation being widespread. While the reign of Demethanos is remembered rather fondly by the people, Myriolio never won the hearts of the people, despite his efforts of creating a cult of personality.

The army, much like the other services, has a professional officers corps open to both active duty officers and reservists.
1967 coup and Acirian intervention
On June 8 1967, the Athivan Revolutionary Front seized power from the military junta which had lead the country since 1934. Following the coup, the name of the island country was changed to the People's Republic of Athíva, and began preparing the country for self-sufficiency. The leaders of the newly established People's Republic imprisoned and executed all leading figures of the former military junta, and eventually began to imprison and execute anyone with ties to the military junta.

The role of marine infantry is one filled by Stenza's Army, with a handful of light infantry divisions being earmarked as marine capable and trained to work with the Navy. One of Stenza's air mobile divisions are also capable of operating from Stenza's maritime assets, and regularly trains on board Navy ships. These divisions use normal Stenzan army equipment, although specialized marine vehicles are available as well.
Following the Athívan imprisonment and execution of Acirian ambassador to Athiva Viceri Battanari, the Emperor of Aciria declared the People's Republic a rogue state and dispatched two Imperial Guard battalions to spearhead the liberation of Athiva. The Imperial Guard battalions and the accompanying companies quickly seized the capital, but the Athivan resistance continued until 1969 when the last leading figures of the People's Republic were captured. Close friend of the Emperor of Aciria, Spiraklis Anastrotsis was appointed as the Archon of the new Archontia of Athiva, and both their constitution and legislature was recreated, basing it on the Acirian constitution and legislature.

Special Personnel Construction Forces
Geography
Main article: Aufaigaluega Faapitoa Faufale
The country consists of one island, Kleftos, named after the ancient Istroyans who thought the natural beauty of the island could only have been stolen from the Gods.
Climate
The island shares the tropical climate with most of the Istroyan islands off the coast of Sarpedon. The only exception is the northeast of the island, where the Moktos mountains give a small portion of the island a more arid climate.

The Aufaigaluega Faapitoa Faufale, or Special Personnel Construction Forces are a specialized branch of the Stenzan military focusing on engineering projects. The branch is mostly manned by convicts and other non-voluntary personnel.
Demographics
According to the Bureau of International Statistics and Records, ethnic Athivans made up 73% of the island's population, with the largest minority being X% [insert ethnicity], and the remaining populations consisting mainly of [insert ethnicity] and Daxian workers who've had their passports taken by the state. The last population census taken by the Military Junta in 1965 shows that ethnic Athivans made up 86% of the nations population, with the largest minority then being Asteklians. The authenticity of the statistics provided by the military junta are often questioned, particularly citing the census seeming to ignore the Athivan migration out of the country during the rule of Myriolio.

Force Composition
The rising tourism industry has also brought many non-nationals into the country as permanent residents.

Stenza's main line combat forces include:
Languages
The most widespread language spoken in Athiva is Athivan, a dialect of Istroyan that's often considered a separate language due to difficulty of communication with mainland Istroyan. Mainland Istroyan has also been taught in schools since 1923, referred to as "Literature Istroyan" by the education system. The only language spoken to a notable extent in the country is Acirian, which has seen a drastic rise in use following the Acirian intervention in the 60s and the following Acirian influence in the nation.

Air Force
Stenza's Air Force, founded in 1934, is a mostly defensive force consisting of a mix of both modern and somewhat older equipment. The air force has both active duty and reserve squadrons, with the reserve squadrons being permanently manned through a month-on five months off basis. Stenza's modern front line fighters are based off a navy design, with older 1980s vintage models augmenting it. The multirole aircraft perform multiple mission sets, such as combat air patrol (CAP), close air support (CAS), interdiction, interception and more. Stenza also has a specialized bomber fleet of 48 1970s vintage strategic bombers, divided into four operational squadrons.

Aside from its combat squadrons, the Stenzan Air Force also has squadrons for transportation (both tactical and strategic), aerial refueling, Airborne Early Warning (AEW) and other miscellaneous tasks. These squadrons not only operate aircraft though, with the Stenzan Air Force also being responsible for the country's static air defenses. Both early warning stations and static air defenses are manned by crews of full time personnel augmented by reservists on a rotational basis, and the country hosts an air integrated air defense system consisting of these assets, interceptor aircraft and naval vessels.

The Stenzan Air Force operates from both its own bases and reserve bases that exist at civilian airports. It is not uncommon for civilian airfields that only serve small regional aircraft to have large runways and the facilities needed to host large military aircraft.

The composition of the Stenzan Air Force includes:

Navy
The Stenzan Navy is the strongest branch of the Stenzan military, having been considered the "Tip of the Spear" for Stenzan protection for decades. With Stenza having been an isolated nation for a long time, it has not taken part in any conflicts aside from the Sudmoll Island Conflicts. Stenza has quite a modern naval force built around four Nuclear-powered Kapiti-class aircraft carriers and five 1940s vintage Ka'o-class Heavy Cruisers, three of which have been modernized to act as missile cruisers while two more have been refurbished as command ships. Stenza's other surface combatants include both modern and outdated Destroyers and Frigates. Under the waves, Stenza has both modern Nuclear powered attack and ballistic missile submarines, supplemented by more numerous diesel-electric submarines. A Maritime Aviation branch completes the Stenzan Navy's offensive capabilities, consisting of both the traditional carrier-borne aviation capabilities, maritime patrol aircraft and a plethora of other aviation forces. The Stenzan navy is considered a blue water force.

The traditional Coast Guard duties of coastal defense, search and rescue and maritime law enforcement are carried out by Stenza's navy, using a plethora of coastal small craft and aircraft split up in Coastal Defense Zones, these zones are usually assigned one or two outdated frigates as well. Reservists generally spend a cruise with Stenza's defensive forces once or twice a year to meet their service obligation.

The Stenzan Navy also operates the Stenzan Auxilliary Navy, a command consisting of both civilian and naval crews that staff Stenza's various support vessels, such as supply ships and transports.

Stenza's navy consists of the following main seafaring forces (Auxilliaries and smaller craft not included):

Nuclear Armanents
Although Stenza's government neither confirms or denies it, Stenza has been known to be a nuclear capable nation that has developed, tested and operationally fielded Nuclear weapons. Stenza's nuclear arsenal is not too large, with Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles reportedly being capable of delivering multiple-hundred kiloton warheads while nuclear tipped torpedoes and aerial missiles being reported to be in the sub-hundred kiloton range. Nuclear-tipped anti-ship missiles are also reportedly fielded, both on surface combatants and on land, although specifics are uncertain and their existence has been denied by the Stenzan government.

Geography

The country consists of one island, Kleftos, named after the ancient Istroyans who thought the natural beauty of the island could only have been stolen from the Gods.

Climate

The island shares the tropical climate with most of the Istroyan islands off the coast of Sarpedon. The only exception is the northeast of the island, where the Moktos mountains give a small portion of the island a more arid climate.

The rising tourism industry has also brought many non-nationals into the country as permanent residents.
