Auvergne (Charentais pronunciation: ​[ovɛʁɲ]) is the most populous city in and capital city of the commonwealth of Maresia. It is the parish seat of Rhône Parish. In 2022, the Census Bureau estimated the population was 844,510. The Auvergne metropolitan area ranks 9th-largest in Cartadania, and had a 2022 population of 9,115,209. The metropolitan area is part of a ten-parish market region or combined statistical area. Between 2010 and 2020, Auvergne was ranked as the country's fastest growing metro area, with 888,000 new residents. Based on Cartadania Census data from 2011 to 2021, it also tops the 50 largest Cartadanian cities as the millennial hub. It is the largest city in northeastern Cartadania. It is the third-fastest growing major city in Cartadania. Residents are referred to as "Auvergnates".

Auvergne has a tropical savanna climate. It is located several miles west of the Rhône River and southwest of Lake Enagen, the largest man-made lake in Maresia.

Government and politics

Auvergne is governed under the strong mayor form of government. The Mayor of Auvergne is the chief executive officer of city government and is elected in four-year terms, with a limit of two consecutive terms. The current mayor is Chantal Micheaux, who took office on March 10, 2019. The City Council is a legislative body served by eleven members. Seven members are elected from the city's each seven arrondissements, and the other four are "at-large" members (serving citywide).

Public school system

Westlake High School is one of 13 that serve Auvergne.

The city's public school system is Rhône Parish Schools which operates all public primary and secondary education facilities within the parish. It is the largest school district within the state of Maresia. An estimated 236,000 students are taught in 236 separate elementary, middle, and high schools. Auvergne commits educational funding directly to Rhône Parish Schools, primarily to its subdistrict, but the school district as a whole as well.

Colleges and universities

Maresia Promontoire University is located west of the city's urban core. It has approximately 43,000 students during any given school year, many of which remain in Auvergne post-graduation. Western Maresia Community College (WMCC) has campuses in Auvergne and neighboring Été. Maresian Commonwealth University's School of Medicine recently constructed a medical campus wing at Saule Hospital of Auvergne in order to grant medical degrees to students in the Western Peninsula region. The city also has several private universities and various vocational schools.
