Socialism and the Democratic Republic

1923-1991: The Covine Democratic Republic (CDR) serves as a medium-sized communist state in Northern Levantia. Initially established after a violent revolution and brutal civil war, it steadily descends into a dictatorship, and under the rule of two dictators (Similar to Lenin and Stalin), the 1960s and 1970s saw a period of reform combined with stagnation. Non-Covine ethnic groups start to demand greater autonomy, and in 1991, after many years of economic decline, the CDR's government collapses. It is during the 1940-1949 period that Nahe was at war with Covina, and lost half of its territory, but it narrowly avoided total occupation

Covine Republic

1991-1993: The Years of Lead for Covina, the new Covine Republic is formed. Outside of the capital and a few military outposts, the nation is in total anarchy. Organized crime takes hold, and a civil war breaks out. In the chaos, Saresia in March 1992 and later a few other mountainous areas break free. In the east, groups near the Vandarch more successfully leave, but as Saresia is seen as part of the "Covine Heartland" they do not recognize the breakaway. However, due to the civil war and the military attempting to overthrow the government, Saresia exists as a state under siege. Located deep in the mountains, it is easily defended, and with Nahean financial backing, remains financially solvent

Vandarch Canal Crisis and Covine State

1992 Vandarch Canal Crisis - general idea is that (Fhainnaeran) was an absolute monarchy prior to a series of events leading up to a civil war some time in the 1910's or '20s. That works well already, as it takes me out of the picture, and the subsequent chaos and stabilization should keep me out of serious international action until the mid-30s or even mid-40s, with a sufficiently battered government and military to not throw themselves into conflicts at a whim like their predecessors. '90s is a good time to reassert some military ability abroad and perhaps carve out an enclave in the eastern region, although not sure if it would take the form of a military territory, a region of my own country not internationally recognized, a puppet state, a DMZ, etc. original border of Covina was up to the canal. A lot of the non-Covine ethnic groups were also in that area so maybe out of fear/opportunism, Fhainnaeran in the 1990s would seize control and establish a buffer zone? gonna pack that idea away for later, though the gov't would jump at the chance to show off a little against a basically ineffective opponent right on their doorstep right next to a major long-term strategic goal

Modern Day

Covina's current leader - Kamil Hanak, President of Covina since 1993 1993-2020: The current regime takes hold under the Covine State. It is centralized like the CDR, but does not accept the socialist label. Under the control of a single dictator, most of the breakaway states were pacified during the 1990s, but Saresia still remains a thorn in his side, but many believe that Saresia and Covina have secretly made peace, but are keeping up the conflict for public appearances. Covina lets Nahe fund Saresia, and Saresia does not rile up other minority groups who want independence
