The Malentine military has largely been a shadow of its former self. A nation that is located on the very islands that were once so heavily focused on their ability to project naval power and punch very far above their own weight to the point of actually having the ability to contest the military prowess of neighboring nations in the region now only maintains a small and basic land-based military force with very little, if any, military tradition and presently has been suspected of large-scale corruption. It has only been since the early 2000s that the Malentine government has started to give its armed forces some much-needed upgrades, mostly through taking in equipment and aid from Tierrador, so as to combat perceived interference from the Arcer government. Because of this initiative, however, relations between Arcerion and Malentina have greatly deteriorated to the point of nearly causing a war if not for international mediation preventing things from going hot. The military upgrades were also done to allow for Malentina to crack down on indigenous nationalist insurgency groups without the need to rely on as much foreign military intervention as they used to in previous years. | |||
However, because the armed forces is still not ready to serve as an overall effective defense force, there exists one military institution that mostly remains because of its supposed effectiveness against foreign invaders, that being the [[Lunar Revolutionary Guard]], which is a {{wp|Military reserve force|reservist force}} that has been built and trained through the use of the very guerilla tactics that have been used by the insular indigenous tribes since long before the colonial eras. They are said to be the greatest obstacle for any international armed forces in the event of a hypothetical invasion. Although named after the armed forces of the shortly-lived indigenous socialist regime, the current incarnation of the Lunar Revolutionary Guard is more of a reservist paramilitary force than a revolutionary vanguard army. The Lunar Revolutionary Guard has been trained to take great advantage of the islands' heavy vegetation and make use of effective tunneling systems to use for cover all the while utilizing a mixture of many traps, night-time ambushes, and raids on key logistical waypoints to make any war an effective slugfest for any occupying force. | |||
