Triessa, officially the State of Triessa (Cartadanian: Estado de Triessa), is a state located in western Cartadania on the island of Urlazio. It is the seventeenth-most populous Cartadanian state as well as the eighteenth-most extensive. Triessa sits along an international border with the Caphirian province Canterra, known as the Luro-Mandera line, as well as bordering the states of Acara, Aleira, and São Andreas. The state capital, Catalaga, is located in the central part of the state, within the Triessa Piedmont region. Granaria, Triessa's most populous city, has 604,291 residents as of 2021 and lies in the states southern coastal region.

History

Original inhabitants

The original inhabitants of the land that would become Triessa, and the island of Urlazio as a whole, were the Adonerii, a thalassocratic, ancient Latinic civilization that controlled the coastlines of much of Canetic, southern Odoneri, and Urlazian basins. The Adonerii are the origin of the Latin language, and consequently for the vulgar Latin spurs that would become the romance languages, including Cartadanian. It was possibly the site for the construction of Arxi, a tower-fortress structure common amongst the Adonerii, although mostly non-existent today in Cartadania. Located in the heartland of the Adonerii civilization, Triessa was the site of many Adonerii city-states, including what would become Catalaga in the state's central valley region, as well as Granaria and Valorica along the Urlazio coast. The latter two cities form the largest metropolitan area in Cartic Urlazio after Auvergne and Aumiers in Maresia. The importance of the sea amongst the Adonerii is seen throughout the history of these cities. Valorica, for example, is home to the largest shipbuilding company in Cartadania, and one of the largest in the world, Valorica Marine.

Imperial era

Triessa started as a loose collection of city-states with a common purpose arising just before the fall of Adonerum. It was subsumed into Caphiria around 518 B.C, when it was combined with the area that is today parts of Cascália and all of São Andreas. The region, known in Caphiria as Mandera, was an autonomous colony of the Republic of Caphiria until 105 B.C. when it became an autonomous province. Its sister colony, Luridarinis, became the province of Ovetta around the same time as Mandera was partitioned into Tarvisium and Sanctus Andreas. Tarvisium became an autonomous province and its outreach increased toward the end of the Republic era.

The province of Tarvisium was important for the production of grains early in its history, hence the establishment and naming of Granarium (now Granaria), which is today the largest city in Triessa. Because of the Luridarian Conflict a few centuries before, the production of grain left a bitter taste in the mouth of many Triessan people, and the extreme differences between Urlazian provinces and mainland Caphiria, generated a period of distrust and aversion towards being part of the country as a whole. In a way, the majority of the disdain was caused by Avonatepes of Luridarinis, historical leader of Luridarinis before its ascension to the Province of Ovetta, and his misuse of resources in the Ovettan valley. It is thought that some of his subjects may have fled to Tarvisium out of necessity. Although Tarvisium became a state of Cartadania in 1718, the ties with Caphirian Urlazio have been strong since the settlement of the area. The cultures of both areas are very similar, and when Tarvisium became Triessa, it also earned the nickname Linewalker in reference to its relationship with the provinces across the Luro-Mandera line that separates Cartadania from Caphiria on Urlazio.

Education

Higher education

Triessa's higher education system consistently ranks in the top five states of the country in terms of academics and enrollment trends, with the University of Triessa being the most prestigious and Granaria State University having the largest enrollment. The state is divided into three systems–University of Triessa system, State University of Triessa system, and the Triessa Tech system, all of which are governed by the Triessa Board of Regents.

Private higher education in Triessa is dominated by a large number of for-profit and "chain" (multi-site) universities, while Piemonte University, Verdanse University, and Earnest College are Triessa's only non-profit four-year private colleges.

Triessa has a wide network of two-year vocational schools and community colleges. These colleges were governed historically by a separate statewide board of directors but, in 2005, the state legislature transferred almost all oversight authority to individual community college districts. The Haverhill County Community College District includes 12 community colleges throughout Haverhill County and is one of the largest in the nation.
