The Avon River, sometimes called the Avonne River, is a river in central Levantia. It primarily originates in Lake Roseney and empties into the Vandarch. For a millennia, it has formed an important international border; it was traditionally the westernmost point of the Holy Levantine Empire and today remains the border between Yonderre and Avonia, which is named for the river. In ancient times, the Avon was part of one of the most significant trade routes. The ancient Avon was used as the middle leg of travelers from Adonerum and later Great Levantia up the Urce River, over a portage and along the Avon, and then up the Vandarch to what is today Faneria. Prevailing winds made oceanic travel between Sarpedon and the north exceedingly difficult, and the Urce-Avon-Vandarch route allowed the shipment of settlers north and goods, especially furs, south. Accordingly, many major cities emerged along the Avon during the Great Levantine period before being either abandoned or Gothicized following the collapse of the empire, after which time the river transformed from a highway of goods to a secure militarized border for the Holy Levantine Empire, which settled Ænglish people as a border march along the river.
