The Bryn, formally the FTA-1983, is an armored personnel carrier produced by Faneria in the late Cold War to replace the horribly dated Bataís. It was developed by several private companies to compete in a bidding process and won, becoming the mainstay infantry carrier vehicle of the Fhainnin military until the introduction of the Dragoon. The Bryn had several variants, including a command post variant, anti-tank variant, and an IFV variant.
Design
Variants
- Type 1983a: Original APC variant with .4" machine gun and full hull space. After the introduction and proliferation of the 1983-e, converted to Type -e or armed medevac role.
- Type 1983c: Command post variant with limited troop seating.
- Type 1983e: 1983-a with added anti-armor missile mount.
- Type 1983f: Up-armored anti-vehicle variant with a .8" autocannon on a variant turret as well as anti-tank missile mount.
Service
The Bryn was completed too late to see service in the Vandarch Canal Crisis, but performed well in live exercises, most notably in robustness in harsh weather, difficult terrain, and maintenance time. The hull was noted as being very cramped with the expanded kit given to soldiers in the late 20th Century, and would often have rucks and additional baggage hooked or tied to the exterior during use.
Bryn variants saw use in Huoxia during several internecine conflicts after the purchase of sixty systems by the Huoxian government, and was key in several battles where government forces utilized chemical weapons followed by advances of buttoned-up Bryns and other troop transports. It also played a limited role in the forces of the Malokan and Ashkenauk provisional governments during the Peninsular War and Final War of the Deluge, relatively matching imported Varshani systems designed in the same era.
In the early 2000s, the Bryn-f, armed with an autocannon and anti-tank missile mount, was replaced by the Dragoon in the IFV role. The Bryn remained the primary 'light FTA' of the National Army until the introduction of the Each MRAP in 2015 and the Capall APC in 2025, which have begun pushing the Bryn out of service except in the reserve and stockpile role in Faneria. The system remains in mainline use in parts of Crona and Alshar, as well as seeing a reverse-engineered variant in Caergwynn in limited use.
