Jones' Defense (often abbreviated as JDS, Jones Defence Studies) is a biannual magazine and academic journal detailing and studying military and defense industry affairs, edited by senior members of the Arcer military and civilian research staff. It is the main military related publication named after Archibald Jones, a prominent member and financier of Arcer defense projects in the early 1900s after the First Great War who published an annual article in the Kinnaird Financial Times on military strategy and policy.
Jones' Defence Journal is part of the larger Jones' Defence Inc. also knows as the Jones' Group, which studies modern militaries, defence procurement, and development of emerging technologies. The first publication of the modern Journal was in 1983, with continuous print since, following a pattern of an issue published in June (Spring edition) and December (Fall edition).
The Journal has a large following and over one million subscribers across the world, and is often cited in newspapers and other media as a reputable defence source.
History
Jones' Defence Journal was originally published in the Kinnaird Financial Times by Archibald Jones, a senior member of the Arcer banking community who had left his white-collar job to serve as a Major with the Royal Moorden Regiment during the First Great War. Having no previous military experience, Jones relied heavily on others' experience but after the war's conclusion kept a passion for military affairs. This began with the annual publication of his research and thoughts on other militaries, ongoing conflicts in Crona and Ixnay, as well as his assessment of modern technology's place in warfare. Jones was one of the first to see the value of aeroplanes for reconnaissance, as the time he spent patrolling in Washakara he felt could have been more effectively done from the air.
After Jones' passing, several former Arcer academics from the Carnish Anglican University as well as retired members of the Arcer military began to collaborate publishing a weekly digest in the Kinnaird Financial Times on defense procurement and their assessment of the current state of Arcer military affairs. This shifted by the early 1980s into a more critical assessment of Arcer performance on the heels of the Fourth Bush War. The group dedicated their new series to Jones, and renamed the publication accordingly, leasing office space for their research and studies group in Kinnaird, with their print office located in the Kurst suburb of Benborough.
Publications
The group was chaired in 1983 by Brigadier-General (retired) Frederick Morley Ambrose, the recently retired commander of the Arcerion Maneuver Training Centre and a career armoured officer, who had also been one of the Task Force commanders in the Operation Teflon area during the Fourth Bush War. Proffesional academics from the Carnish Anglican University, Craigfearn University, and senior defence fellows on assignment to the Royal Arcer Military College were all invited to publish articles in the first edition. over the following decades and subsequent editions, the staff would grow to fifty people by 2000, and the annual publications were sent to offices on all seven of Ixnay's continents. By this time, foreign invites had been sent and articles on Urcean defence strategy, Daxian military performance, and other topics were written by foreign authors and officials, allowing Jones' to become the leading defence think tank and informaiton group in Ixnay.
Jones' Defence Ranking
Jones' Defence Ranking is a letter-grade system designed in 1994 by the Jones' Defence Group aimed at providing an honest and accurate assessment of a nation or organization's military abilities based on several criteria. The group looks at softer metrics such as procurement strategy, government-corporate interfacing, future development outlook, individual and collective training standards, and strategic defence and security policy. Also taken into account are more concrete or finite metrics such as number of available combat aircraft, warships, armoured fighting vehicles, historical performance on operations, and actual military doctrine at the operational and tactical level.
While there has been some debate over the methods and findings of Jones' Defence Ranking, in general it is seen as an accurate and approximate standard for military performance in Ixnay.
Jones' Defense Information Services
Jones' Defence Information Services, commonly referred to as Jones', is a global open-source intelligence company and research group, specializing in military, national security, aeropsace and transport topics. It is notable for tracking the growing militaries of Sarpedonian and Alshari nations, as well as detailing the rise of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and their development.
