Sierra High School is a public high school located in the city of Sierra, Verona, Cartadania that serves grades 9 through 12 as part of the Sierra Independent School District. It is currently located on Parkview Avenue on a 42 acres (0.17 km2) lot within the city's Central district, but was previously located along County Street. It is one of eleven high schools serving central Sierra, and the most recently built (rebuilt) high school in central city.
History
Sierra originally opened in fall 1982 with grades 9-12, with the first students graduating from the school in 1983. It was built to ease overcrowding at Liberty High School due to an influx of people into Sierra's downtown area, but soon became overcrowded itself. In 1998, a critical failure in the school's foundation caused by an earthquake resulted in the district having to close the school and all students were temporarily shifted to Ainsley High School.
With the turn of the century, many of the district's priorities were shifted from rebuilding Sierra High to building schools in the district's rapidly developing outer communities. As a result, twenty-seven other high schools opened in the district before Sierra High was rebuilt, including Adastra High School in the central district.
In 2014, the district once again shifted its focus back to the city center and planned to reopen Sierra High School. Because of eight of the eleven central district high schools were overcrowded, the district needed to build Sierra much bigger than it had in the past. This resulted in a four-story building that was one of the largest in the country and often mistaken for a shopping mall during its construction. The district spent €231 million on the entirety of the school's campus, and it officially reopened on 15 August 2016.
Facilities
Sierra High School has a centralized campus with one building housing all students. The campus also includes an athletics building that is connected to the schools athletics fields, a parking garage, and numerous support buildings across its grounds.
Its campus is adjoined by Graystone Middle School, while Astrid R. Vasqués Elementary School is located on the plot of land across from the school. Though it is primarily fed by these two schools, Sierra pulls from three middle schools and five elementary schools.
Athletics
Sierra High School competes in the Verona Interscholastic Federation's 2nd Region under the 6A classification for the Sunshine district. In doing so, it's direct rivals for many sports are the schools located in that district, all of which are located in central Sierra. For gridiron and association football, the school only competes against the schools in the sunshine district. For sports with more than ten main season events, the school competes from a roster of neighboring districts. For basketball, with its 35 games, the school competes against the Angler District, Black Diamond District, Nereid District, amounting 34 games, with the last being any non-fulfilled highschool in the region.
Aside from the above listed, the school competes in tennis, cheerleading, swimming, volleyball, softball, baseball, and many others. The Commonwealth of Verona does not restrict access to sports by gender or sex, however, Sierra ISD does split contact sports in this manner.
