User:Kir/Social-Cultural Relations
This page is a place to keep track of interactions, intersections, and cross-influences between Kiravia and other countries, specifically in the cultural and social spheres. 'Foreign relations of' pages must naturally focus on political and diplomatic relations, and macro-level trade relationships are more of a practical question. I maintain that most of the really good interactive lore will be in this sphere, and that as we work to maximise lore interconnectivity it would be good to have a single, wikilinked page where these things can be seen all at once.
First and foremost this is supposed to be a clearinghouse, but with good fortune the content can someday be spun out into individual articles and/or a canonical listicle.
Material/technological exchanges, especially in historic perspective, will also be noted here, as well as some micro-level economic interactions (e.g. "Xelphian company Bigcorp Industries operates six taco factories in South Kirav"). Ditto for political *influences* that don't really qualify as diplomacy (e.g. the diffusion of political ideas and movements).
The main body of each section will cover bidirectional (Xelphia ⇔ Kirav) exchanges and cultural imports (Xelphia ⇒ Kirav); cultural exports (Kirav ⇒ Xelphia) are sequestered in their own subsection for clarity/reminder to get consent from the other member.
Kilikas-Boreal Region
Caergwynn
- There is an ethnic Caeric diaspora in Kiravia, particularly noticeable in places like the Darran Valley.
- Caeric missionaries sponsored by the Association of Free Churches were responsible for the establishment of Methodism in Kiravia, now the country's largest Protestant confession.
Faneria
[Will probably need to break this up into lists by field]
- People and genes - Long history of cross-migration and interbreeding, going back millennia. In addition to the old-stock Kiravian Gaels, whose ancestors mostly came from what is now Faneria, there are large Fanerian-Kiravian communities of more recent (since 19th century AD) origin, and of course there are the Coscivian minority in Penthrav and the Coscivfhainn.
- Rye - True rye (as opposed to Elymus, "wildrye") was most likely introduced from what is now Faneria during the Second Empire↓ I don't actually know what this means anymore.
- Cattle - COWS
- Limnolatry - According to woman Vaśa Alôxin, cross-Kilikas cultural exchange with the Fenni, whose religion focused on reverance for freshwater and bodies of freshwater, for providing an impetus for the revival of latent water-centred spirituality (post breakdown of the Moon-Ocean dyad among the prehistoric Kiravians. A visible, enduring legacy of this is the maintenance of shrines (both Kirandist ones and Christian chapels) at the sources of rivers, and also at certain waterfalls across Kirav.
- Hockey - Boreal Hockey League comprises Kiravian and Fanerian teams.
- Trade names - Many Kiravian company names are two-word constructions or portmanteaux in CamelCase. This is attributable to Fhainnin influence.
Exports
Fiannria
• Kilikas Enlightenment ideals
• Corcoran Institution
• Golf?
South Crona
Asteria
the Cape
- People and genes - Plurality/majority of Capetians are of at least partial Kiravian descent. There are many people of Capetian origin living in Kiravia, from United Empire Loyalists who relocated to Æonara after independence to Lusophones (this may be switching to Francophones) with 0% Kiravian ancestry who showed up yesterday at Sarosten-Sirana International Airport. Cape-KF dual citizenship is very common on both sides of the water.
- Restarkism - Influenced the United Allegiance Society and National Power Party.
- National Service - The Remnant modelled its National Service system on that of its neighbour.
- Indigenous Cronan influences from the Cape on Kiravian culture, politics, etc. should be delved into.
Exports
• Beer - The Crona Pale Ale, originally brewed in Saar-Silverda and other Farravonian port cities specifically for export to the South Cronan colonies. The recipe was devised to ensure that the beer would hold up well during the long journey to its tropical destination.
Kuronia
Paulastra
- Western Mountain Boxing - Yes.
- Cola - Also yes.
Tierrador
CLEARS
Exports
• Hockey - Would make sense for Kiravians to have at least partial credit for introducing the sport to Tierrador.
Elsewhere
Alstin
Ardmore
Avonia
Burgundie
Cartadania
On hold awaiting language question to be settled.
Kiravian soccer culture, to the extent that it exists, may be derivative of the Cartadanian.
Caphiria
- Tiered citizenship believed by most scholars to have been an emulation of the Caphirian system on the part of the Founding Fathers.
- Hekuvihírsa
- The effect of Hekuvihírsa on Kiravian onomastics
- Just in the last few decades Kiravian coffee culture and tastes have been emulating the Caphirian more.
- Kiro-Hekuvian Party
- Caphirian investors overrepresented among the foreign sponsors/coöwners of látuxarin and this has influenced Kiravian corporate culture.
Exports
- There is a large Kiravian/Coscivian minority in Caphiria; many in this community trace their roots specifically to South Kirav, the Baylands. This was important during the Sunderance especially and continues to be a diplomatically important constituency.
- Váuadra v. Ausonius - Otherwise eligible Kiravian citizen who also held Caphirian citizenship disqualified from running for Prime Executive on account of't. He could have become eligible by renouncing Caphirian citizenship but was so proud of it that he opted to withdraw rather than give it up.
- Kiravian EDM popular in Caphiria
Castadilla
Daxia
- The main kitsch fauxotic pub theme in Kirland is probably Daxian- and/or Metzettan-inspired. The "chinki bar", if you will.
- "The exception to this trend are the enterprising Corummese, who appear to be quite comfortable as living as strangers in a strange land. Most decently-sized Kiravian cities, even in the underdeveloped inland states, can now boast a Corummtown."
- Jell-o
Hendalarsk
- Possible prehistoric genetic connexion: Some nameless Ice Age Levantine population contributed genes to both the pre-icebridge ancestral Kiravians and the substrate population that would become the Hendalarskaran Goths (or at least some elite stratum among them). Unusually high frequency of left-handing in both populations is attributed to this, and gave rise to the absence (in Coscivian languages) and inversion (in Hendalarskaran Gothic) of the sinister-dexter semantic associations found in most other languages.
Metzetta
- Rail gauge: Great minds spark alike.
- There are some ethnic Metzei in Kiravia. Some are multi-generationally present in the country, having come during the West Kiravian Silver Rush.
- M-Pop and M-Dramas - Popular in Kiravia!
Olmeria
- Arctic Islam
Pelaxia
- Marxism - ℅ Kiravian Marxist philosophy
Qustantistan
The Qustantistani sovereign wealth fund has contributed to reconstruction and development projects in the Mid-Atrassic States.
Kiravia is home to one of the largest populations of adherents to Qustanti Islam outside the borders of Qustantistan itself. This creates an important constituency in Kiravia in favour of friendly relations with Qustantistan and creates a space for substantive public diplomacy and paradiplomacy through faith-based NGOs affiliated with the sect.
Takatta Loa
- Tacos - The much-beloved taco found its way to Kiravian shores through enduring commercial ties to Takatta Loa. There are two main nativised forms of the taco in Great Kirav: Northern-style tacos that use a sourdough rye or Coscivian cuckwheat crêpe as the base, and Southern-style tacos that use a wheat flatbread. Northern tacos come in both hard- and soft-shelled forms, while Southern tacos are customarily soft-shelled. In both regions, fish, crabmeat, and shrimp are the most common filling, and crab seasoning is commonly added to enhance flavour. Southern-style tacos may also be filled with devilled ham. In Niyaska, there is a northern-style variant filled with shredded tuna, hot peppers, and capers. Æonarans, Krasoa Islanders, and Pribraltarians eat tacos that more closely resemble the original Loa varieties.
There are communities of ethnic Loa, including Loa Muslims, in Kiravia. Places that come immediately to mind are the Krasoa Islands (esp. Nív-Martain), Sarolasta (mainly Rakitea, also Mahavi City), and Prevarda (Muslims only).
Thervala
Urcea
- There should be more here. Will work on this.
- The Third Evangelisation, which cemented the dominance of Catholicism in the Kiravian coastal provinces, transmitted to Kiravians many elements of religious practice identifiably Urcean in provenance, with a lasting influence on devotional practices, clerical norms, religious art, theological studies, etc.
- Disurbanism
- Wheat beer - Most popular in Porfíria, thanks to influence from neighbouring New Harren.
- There should be some connexion as regards modern Catholic thought, Christian-democratic movement, socio-economic models.
- Originally had hardtack being borrowed from Urcea but Big Climate probably nixes that.
- Baseball. Basketball too?
Varshan
Yonderre
- Circus - A mid-19th century cultural import from Yonderre.
- Primo Kino films very popular with the potato-people market.
Zaclaria
- There are random pockets of Zacc-style Muslims in the Western Highlands, and this may have some relation to the Sultan-ly family's passion for alpinism.
