Catholic Levantia is a geographical region, roughly corresponding to the modern membership of the Levantine Union, including nations and peoples whose histories are substantially linked by the history of Great Levantia, the Holy Levantine Empire, and their shared Catholic faith. The term is used generally to differentiate this part of Levantia from Ultmar, whose history, culture, and religious background significantly differs from that of Catholic Levantia. Within this region, Catholic Levantia is implied in many social settings to mean the "superior" or "civilized" part of Levantia as opposed to the "backward" and "heretical" parts of the continent. Accordingly, the term "Catholic Levantia" is often used as a derogatory phrase in Ultmar to refer to the general pretentiousness of the region. Several alternatives to the term have been proposed, especially by members of the College of Levantine Churches, with suggestions including "Cisvandarcia" for Catholic Levantia and "Transvandarcia" for Ultmar, referring to their respective positions relative to the Vandarch; these suggestions are related to the Levantine naming dispute.
