The Cartadanian Army (Cartadanian: Exército Cartadaniana, also formerly known as Legio Septentrionalis, Armada Cartadaniana, or as Northern Legion, abbreviated EC) is Cartadania's land warfare force. Formed prior to the country's independence as an autonomous reporting unit of the Imperial Legion, due in part to Caphiria's large size, it is the oldest of the three main branches of the Cartadanian Armed Forces and the third-oldest army in continuous existence in Sarpedon. Since its formation, the EC has taken a significant role in Cartadanian military history. In particular, it played a large part in Cartadania's fight during the Second Great War, especially on fronts against Caphiria and Vachena.
The Cartadanian Army is a military service branch organized within the Department of the Army, one of the three military departments of the Department of Defense. The Army, through the Department of the Army is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Army, who reports to the Secretary of Defense and is appointed by the President. The highest-ranking military officer in the Army is the Chief of Staff, who exercises supervision over Army units and serves as one of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As directed by the Secretary of Defense and Secretary of the Navy, certain Army components are assigned to unified combatant commands. Combatant commanders are delegated operational authority of the forces assigned to them, while the Secretary of the Army and the Chief of Staff retain administrative authority over their members.
