The Kiravian Strategic Space Force is a formation of the Kiravian Armed Forces subordinate to Army Strategic Command. It is responsible for the advancement of Kiravian strategic interests in and the projection of Kiravian military power into outer space.
History
The predecessor of the Strategic Space Force, Unit 727 of the KPA Strategic Corps, was created in 21142 under the Kirosocialist government to investigate the military applications of the Kiravian space programme and develop a long-term strategy to attain space superiority. The Federalist analogue, Army Aircorps Orbital Command, was focused mainly on satellite operations and early electronic warfare, and was central to later iterations of planning for Operation Circle K. During the tenure of Prime Executive Rénkédar, the Aircorps Orbital Command was integrated with the Army Space Programme Directorate and several other units to form the Strategic Space Force, and was reorganised under the newly-formed Army Strategic Command. Although the SSF remained classified until 211202, the existence of a Kiravian space force was strongly suspected by the press, public, and foreign intelligence services, and was hinted at in statements such as that made by Rénkédar in his third Autumn Address: "We will conquer space just as we and the Coscivian Empire before us conquered the oceans. The Moon, the planets, and the stars beyond are nothing but islands in the endless sea of space." The first formal allusion to the SSF was made in 211200, when Prime Executive Irasur Mérovin confirmed to a reporter at a press conference that "there is an active unit of the Kiravian armed forces dedicated to ensuring Kiravian security in outer space."
Operations
The Strategic Space Force is headquartered at Fort Vismar, located in the Miradèt Desert in Amóxav Territory, but also has operations at the Jade Coast Spaceport in the Melian Islands. Its activities and most of its budget are classified, but are widely believed to include research and development in the following areas:
- Space warships including a joint project between the Kiravian and Alkharvian militaries known as a "solar war-blimp"
- Orbital weapons platforms capable of striking targets on the Earth's surface, in orbit, or elsewhere
- Astronautic war including the training of and development of equipment for a corps of space marines
- Electromagnetic space war
- Extraterrestrial invasion contingency planning
- Multiplanetary expeditionary capabilities
