Maessen is the Capital city and largest city of Eldmora and the Eldmora-Regulus Confederation by both area and population with 3.2 million inhabitants. One of Eldmora's twentyone constituent states, Maessen is surrounded by Herzland to the north, Hennegau to the south-west and Niederland to the south-east. Schwarzburg, Herzlands largest city, is part of Maessen's urban area and has a population of around 4.1 million, and is the second-most populous urban area in Eldmora after Viridis. The Maessen Metropolitan Region has around 5 million inhabitants and is Elmora's second-largest metropolitan region after the Eld-Viridis region.
Maessen straddles the banks of the Eld, as well as the Roth, a tributary of the Eld, in the eastern borough of Osterberg and the Kaiserkanal in the western part of the city, which flows into the Mäanderbach. Among the city's main topographical features are the many lakes that surround the city, and are formed by the Roth and Eld, the largest of which is Lake Emperor. Due to its location near the Vandarch, Maessen is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. About three-quarters of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals, and lakes. The city lies in the Northern Eldmoran dialect area.
