KirRail, formally Federal Rail Carriage Public Autonymous Company (Kiravic: Rektārkax Vóndisuluámakelen Tarśuathnūderıdh ) is a Kiravian government-owned corporation that is the de facto monopoly provider of intercity passenger rail service in Great Kirav, where it operates as Great Kiravian Railways, and Æonara, where it operates as ÆonFlux Transit.

History

KirRail was formed in 1991 AD in the process of consolidating Kiravian reunification, as a merger of the Kiravian Union's People's Rail Service and the passenger division of the Kiravian Remnant's National Railway Board. In Æonara, intercity passenger trains competed with widely-owned personal automobiles and relied heavily on the ridership of elderly and disabled persons, active-duty military personnel and National Service youth (eligible for discounted fare), the poor, and business travellers. In the Kiravian Union, on the other hand, passenger trains were the standard mode of inter-regional transport for the masses, and the Kirosocialist government had for decades touted democratisation of the railways as one of its greatest achievements. After reunification, the functions of the national government and its public sector undertakings were massively downsized by the Reform Acts and related legislation. Despite some initial calls from National Renewal Movement hardliners, privatisation of the People's Rail Service was judged too unwieldy and politically infeasible by Kiravian leadership, resulting instead in its restructuring as a public autonymous company under the indirect purview of the Territorial Executive. Koskenkorvan railways were separately devolved to the provincial government. The post-reunification Kiravian economic recovery and increased access to affordable car and air travel caused KirRail ridership to plummet during the 1990s and 2000s AD, forcing the company to scale back its services and close most of its smaller regional lines to focus on trans-continental routes and the country's the largest urban corridors.
