  • Anglei King Godwin III
  • The Nordmontaine War was a conflict between the central authorities of the Holy Levantine Empire, the crusader realm Joanusterra and the Kingdom of Angla as a consequence of the Protestant Reformation. Emperor Conchobar III's vigorous prosecution of the counter-reformation led to consistent disagreement and disputes between the Emperor and the Protestant princes of the Empire, especially those in the Kingdom of Dericania. By 1543 the Emperor began to use the Imperial Army and Joanusterran Knights of the Realm to enforce the restoration of Church property throughout the Empire, with Angla being the largest appropriator of Church lands. The Emperor marched into Angla in 1543, beginning the Nordmontaine War. By 1554, King Godwin III was killed by the Imperial Army at the Battle of Highmarch, ending the war and shattering the Kingdom of Angla. The total dissolution of such a powerful Protestant realm led to Urcea and Gassavelia forming the Protestant Union in the same year along with smaller princes within the Empire, especially within Dericania.

    Legacy

The Nordmontaine War resulted in the complete destruction of a united Ænglish state, dividing the Ænglish people for nearly three centuries until the establishment of Anglei in 1884. The war and destruction led to Ænglophobia being engrained within many Levantine societies, and conversely led to increasing Burgophobia directed at Joanusterra in the remaining Ænglish lands. Following its partition, the Imperial Diet adopted a measure officially prohibiting any Ænglish polity from being created. This measure, known as the "Shameful Prohibition" in Anglei, was repealed ahead of the Concordat of Donnebourg.
